Journal #8: National Geographic

What are the pros and cons of being a Photojournalist?

I think that being a photojournalist would be a very surreal career. You would be able to travel all over the world, sight see, get up close to different animals, and meet lots of very interesting people. I think that it's awesome that people have been able to make a career out of something that just started out as a hobby.

Even though there are a lot of perks to being a Photojournalist, there are cons as well. Being away from family and friends is obviously one of them. Also, places they travel to can be potentially dangerous, as well as the situations they are in when trying to take the perfect shot. Depending on where they are in the world, there could be robbery, sickness, hostage situations, etc. Another disadvantage is that you may experience long work days, as you would have to put in a lot of time to get the perfect shot.

What skills does a Photojournalist need to have?

I think to be a Photojournalist, you would need to be adventurous. They travel all over the world and see new things every day. I think you would also need to be brave, and have courage, as you may be put into situations unknown. You would need to be creative, as you would need to see things ordinary people wouldn't, to make beautiful photos. I feel as though you would need to be intelligent. You would need to know how to communicate with people who don't speak the same language as you, and also get yourself to where you need to go. You would have to appreciate the beauty of everything around you and see the potential to make something beautiful.
